The beggar woman had grown up in poverty, and despite years of hard work and effort, had not been able to escape it.
She’d come close a few times. But luck hadn’t been on her side. Fate hadn’t smiled.
In ten years, her home had been accidentally burned to the ground, her youngest daughter had developed an incurable sickness, and her husband had run away, never to return.
Most of all, the beggar woman lamented that she didn’t have a penny to her name. With a penny or two, she cried, I could do something. But I have nothing.
In a fit of inspiration and upset, Abundita left the woman. In corporeal form, she plucked seven shining stars from the night sky.
She then took these stars to a blessed forge, beyond the knowledge of most mortals.
She placed them in the hands of the blacksmith waiting there and asked him to forge the strongest shield known to man.
A shield constructed primarily from the lucky, prosperous power of stars.
On that day, over hours of hard work, Abundita’s Stellar Shield was created.
In the early hours of the next morning, Abundita returned to the beggar woman. She found her fast asleep in the same spot that she had left her.
Not wanting to wake her from peaceful sleep, Abundita lay her Stellar Shield at the woman’s side.
She wrote the woman a note and slipped it beneath her palm.
The note read: Call for me in one year, and I will return to reclaim this lucky shield of star power and light. In the meantime, find your prosperity. Change your life.
Then, Abundita left and occupied herself elsewhere.
In a year, she heard a human call, and she knew that it was the beggar woman.
She responded to the call to find a noblewoman waiting, and it took her a moment to see that this was, in fact, the same person.
Abundita’s Stellar Shield had done its job perfectly, and the woman’s life had been transformed.
Now, she had the money she needed, and everything else followed suit.
She used the money to clothe, feed and house her family. To treat her daughter’s sickness. To move away from the town full of dark memories of the past.
That’s the thing about money, : They say it can’t buy happiness, but we all know it’s more complicated than that.
Money might not make you happy, but a lack of money can definitely make you miserable.
And this woman wasn’t miserable anymore. She happily and proudly handed it to Abundita, and within two weeks, Abundita had found the Shield a new home with another deserving mortal in need of some prosperity.
When Abundita turned to stardust and left her life as a goddess behind, the responsibility of Abundita’s Stellar Shield fell to her daughter.
And to her daughter’s daughter. And to her daughter’s daughter’s daughter.
Eventually, the family line came to an end, and the Shield moved into psychic circles.
That’s how I came across it, . My mentor had been its guardian for 10 years when he passed it on to me, warning me to pay attention to signs from the astral forces.

I just thought, in passing: That’s strange. I pocketed it, planning to hand it in somewhere when I finished my hike, and I kept moving.
Not ten minutes later, I felt intensely drawn to a large tree a couple of minutes off the track. I had to go to it, even though my conscious mind didn’t understand why. So, I did.
And at the foot of this tree, nestled between two overgrown, visible roots, I found a green velvet box, slightly smaller than a shoebox in size.
When I opened the box, I was faced with an impressive array of gold and silver coins. It was a currency I didn’t recognize, but by sight alone, I knew they were extremely valuable.
At this point, I was confused. It’s normal enough for someone to drop a piece of jewelry during a hike.
But to deliberately leave something this valuable at the base of a tree in the middle of the woods? It didn’t feel like something anyone would do.
I put down the box and fumbled in my pocket for the signet ring, hoping, I suppose, to compare the metals. To judge if these items had come from the same source.
But the ring had disappeared. It just wasn’t on my person anymore!
Then, I looked down at the ground and found that the green velvet box had disappeared, too. It was so strange, .
Until I looked dead ahead.
Until I saw, carved into the tree trunk: .
Then, I realized what was happening, because as I’ve told you already, it’s happened before.

- In the early morning, when I’m all alone, I spot a symbol of wealth and prosperity of some kind, in a place I wasn’t expecting to find such a symbol.
