Card number two was the upright (the solitary upright in this reading, actually) Three of Swords, representing heartbreak, pain and loss.

That might be for a person’s death, for a friendship/relationship that came to an unexpected end, or even for a part of yourself that you feel genuinely disconnected from. Whatever the type of grief you’re battling, it’ll be – at times – soul-wrenching and all-encompassingly awful.

CARD NUMBER THREE: KING OF CUPS, REVERSED

Your third pick follows on from the first two, a direct result. It’s the King of Cups (reversed), representing unhelpful behaviors and unnecessary cruelty to others.

You’ll be colder in the aftermath of pushing down your emotions and getting hollowed out by grief. Your patience for questions and tolerance for clarifying meaning will reduce significantly, making you harder to talk to and almost impossible to confide in – even for your closest loved ones. As you’d expect, this will have a palpable and ongoing impact.

CARD NUMBER FOUR: DEATH, REVERSED

The reading concludes with Death, reversed, a card representing a fading and stagnating person, determined to hold on too tightly to what once was – and is no longer. 

As human beings, we innately fear change. But Death’s presence as the concluding card? It tells us that your future will be filled with moments when you allow that fear to define and control you.
