Then, another surprise: The bear cub opened its mouth and dropped a stone directly into my palm – a chunk of raw-cut green peridot sparkling in the afternoon light.

Things grew stranger still when the bear cub hopped out of my lap, stood on its little hind legs before me, and started talking.
