Usually, they watch things play out. They root for us, but they know that destiny must take the course it will. That challenge is a brutal but necessary part of human life.

It wasn’t long after I’d woken up. I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth when my reflection disappeared from the mirror.

I was shocked for a second, but as soon as the shock hit me, my face was replaced by another. By a human-but-inhuman face-shaped blur that seemed to be constructed of a swirling elemental combination of fire and water.

I thought to myself: An ancient ancestor appears to me! An entity that has long existed out of human form retakes that shape to speak! What will the entity say!?

And soon, I had my answer.

This entity spoke of you. Of the trials and tribulations you’d endured recently and the precious artifact that could now be presented to you because you had reached the correct balance status.

I’m sure you wonder what that means. What is “balance status?”

In simple terms, it’s a way to describe your relative levels of a) need for support and b) worthiness to receive it. Those levels had synchronized, necessitating ancestral action. 

The artifact in question, he told me, is called the Tiebound Sword of Felicity. The “ties that bind” – our familial bonds – don’t end with those we know. Our ancestors are as tiebound to us as our brothers and sisters. And in this case?

2. Right on the visible floor, deep beneath the surface, was the Tiebound Sword of Felicity, shining its light through the blue.

When I popped back up, greedily breathing in the air I’d been missing, the light was gone, and I was alone.
